New Daytime Classes! Materia medica Series-2014

Over the years, I have heard from many good herb folks that they are interested in day time classes. In answer to that, I’ll be scheduling some weekday courses.

The first daytime course I will offer is a 5 week study in Materia medica.  We will comb through the details of 3+ plants per class (time permitting), tasting them, learning deeply about their medicinal history and nature, their emotional disposition, and working up formulas. You will be expected to write reports, and some articles about these plants. I’ll probably come up with other interesting hands on projects as well!

This course will do well to stand on it’s own, but also augments the work that we do in the night time courses. It is appropriate for beginners and those who are more knowledgeable alike.

Week 1- Weeds for Wellness!

In this class, we will study plants that are cool, stimulating, and bitter. Some of them you will have heard of, for they grow in your backyard, while others will not be as widely known.

This won’t be your typical backyard garden party of plants, though, as we’ll be investigating the how, why, when to use and on whom specifics of each plant.

Plants to be included: dandelion root, artichoke leaf, culvers root, and gentian root

Week 2- Flowers for Finer Spirits

Whether sweet and floral, pungent or bitter, flowers are a fine addition to a medicine chest. We’ll study each of these flowers specific indications, and what taste to use when.

Plants to be included: passionflower, motherwort, skullcap, elder flower and California poppy

Week 3- Plants that are Pungent and Warm

Winter brings a craving for things that warm the constitution, but some folks need these plants for balance year round.

Plants to be included- cardamom seeds, fenugreek,  Angelica archangelica, and turmeric

Week 4- Salty and Sweet, Mucilaginous and Moistening

Plants that are used to turn dry tissue lively and moist are fascinating. In some cases they are leaves, in some they are roots. They may work to restore a cell or tissues water and mineral balance, and coat to protect, calm irritation from dryness, or increase the flow of fluid.

Plants to be included- marshmallow root, cleavers, calendula, and burdock root

Week 5- Nutritious Plants for Brews

Class 5 will focus on single plants for long cold infusions to make nutrient dense teas with. In this class, we’ll  put together some formulas of brews to experiment with taste, and with class input and research, will label what each tea formula is good for, what vitamins and minerals it’s high in, and what season it is best to be drunk in.

Plants to be included: raspberry leaf, oat straw, nettles, hibiscus, hawthorn berries, cinnamon bark, dandelion leaf and root, and burdock root

Time: 10:30 am- 12:30 pm.

Cost: $250, cash, check or charge

FYI: This class will run with 6 or more applicants.
